A day trip to Bolnisi and Dmanisi is a brief voyage into the ancient history of Georgia, back to the era of the Georgian language's development and the arrival of Christianity in the Caucasus. This excursion will not only acquaint you with Georgian culture but also unveil the enigmatic chapters of the country's history, which remain virtually unknown to most.

Explore the first European historical landmarks of the Kvemo Kartli region, Bolnisi Cathedral, and the Dmanisi archaeological complex. Immerse yourself in Georgian architecture, delve into history, culture, and traditions, all while savoring traditional Georgian cuisine and wine.

We will visit:

  • Asureti: A German village known as the colony of Elizabeth. Here, we will explore the German Church and indulge in a free wine tasting, savoring delicious local wines. Asureti is a fascinating village located on the Koda-Tetriskaro road, approximately 45 km from Tbilisi, Georgia. It was founded on November 19, 1818, by 72 German immigrant families under the name Elisabethtal or Elisabeththal.
  • Bolnisi: Our next stop will be the Georgian Numismatics and Artifacts Museum. Bolnisi Museum stands as a model of a 21st-century regional museum and a holistic ecosystem where various aspects of science, culture, education, and tourism coexist in a single space.
  • Bolnisi Sioni Cathedral: This cathedral is renowned for its Georgian inscriptions, some of the oldest historical documents in the Georgian alphabet. It is the first Georgian building to display a completion date on its exterior. Bolnisi Sioni's decorative design follows a Sasanian style, featuring intricate curling vine scrolls, arabesques, and foliate motifs. Uniform masonry blocks were used to expand upon the original late antiquity remnants on the southern façade.
  • Dmanisi: Our tour continues with a visit to Dmanisi, known for the discovery of the jaw of an ancient human. The early Paleolithic site of Dmanisi was unearthed in 1983, beneath the abandoned medieval town of Dmanisi. During the Middle Ages, Dmanisi was a prominent city located along the Silk Road. Dmanisi is home to Europe's oldest human skull, dating back 1.81 million years, making it the earliest find of its kind outside of Africa. Located in the southern Georgia region of Kvemo Kartli, you can explore the museum to examine archaeological excavations of a Bronze Age settlement and view the fossilized remains of the first discovered human couple in Europe, known by the truly Georgian names Zezva and Mzia!
