What you'll see on the road
There are several routes, but the most common and scenic one is via the Georgian Military Highway (S-3/E-117). This road offers breathtaking views and is well-maintained. It's approximately 157 kilometers (97 miles) long and takes about 3-4 hours to drive, depending on road conditions and stops.
Throughout your journey, take time to enjoy the stunning landscapes, lush valleys, and towering peaks of the Greater Caucasus Mountains. Approximately 70 kilometers from Tbilisi, you'll come across the Ananuri Fortress complex on the shores of the Zhinvali Reservoir. This medieval fortress includes churches, towers, and picturesque views.
You'll cross the Gudauri Pass (also known as Cross Pass), which stands at an elevation of over 2,380 meters (7,808 feet). The views here are spectacular, and you may encounter traditional Georgian souvenir stalls. Once you arrive in Stepantsminda, take some time to explore the charming town, interact with the locals, and enjoy the cozy atmosphere. There are also some small museums and shops to visit. The highlight of your journey is the Gergeti Trinity Church (Tsminda Sameba), which is located in Stepantsminda (Kazbegi). The church is perched on a hill with the stunning backdrop of Mount Kazbek. The last part of the road leading to the church can be challenging, but the view is well worth it.
